Outreach Opportunity

Cris Rude has asked if anyone would be willing to help with fall cleanup at the Mulligans on October 15th starting at 9AM. It would be great if she could get several women and a couple of men to help with fall chores. If you're available and would like to assist, please give Cris a call or stop her at church and let her know you will be there.

Phil 2:1-2 (NNAS) Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.

The Roof Over Their Heads

This fall, Bethel Church in Galesburg has signed on to replace the steel roof of the chapel at Faith Bible Camp and could use some assistance. If you've ever had the desire to play on the roof and are handy with hand tools, please join us at the camp on Friday, October 3rd or Saturday, October 4th for a day of fun in the sun as we remove the old roof and install new steel panels. Bring along a sleeping bag if you'd like and spend the night in one of the FBC cabins for a real camp out experience. The crew at FBC has even offered to supply meals for the 2 days so come...join us. For more details you can contact either Jeff Bash or Ron Smith. We're hoping to put together a car pool from the Canton Evangelical Free Church at 1300 East Chestnut as well.

Yard Work and Cleaning at Mulligans

There will be a work day for those that are able to help do some clean up and landscaping / pruning at the Mulligan's on Saturday, August 16th starting at 9AM. As Shirley continues to feel the effects of her heart condition, I know that this would be an encouragement to her. Often we take the smaller tasks for granted but as we struggle with life's setbacks these tasks can become quite overwhelming.

There are windows to be washed (will need buckets, window cleaner, rags or paper towels), some mildewed walls to be scrubbed (or perhaps power washed if there is one available) and some shrubs that need a good trim (tree trimmers, pruning shears, hedge clippers). Will probably give the yard a quick pick up as well, what with the winds we've been having. Shirley said she would love to have her flower garden weeded also. Ideally we need 6 for yard work (two for front shrubs, two for side shrubs, and two to wash mildew off back of garage).
They have several windows, so it would be wonderful to have at least 6 to 8 ladies to wash windows on outside, and weed the front flowers. We will need at least 3 or 4 step ladders.

I'm hoping we can get all this done in a couple of hours, three tops if we have a large enough crew. Other tools that would come in handy would be rakes and weed whackers.

I'm also still attempting to get a work day scheduled for Irene Sale's home, which needs some exterior walls replaced (OSB removed and new installed and painted) and perhaps some roof work. More on this once I have a date set.

If you can help on the 16th please let me know so I can be sure we have a crew and tools to do the job.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Yesterday's News

It occurred to me the other evening while listening to David Tader share his story of the work being done in Louisiana that few outside that room had given a single thought that day to the suffering still going on there. The most common question to any mention of Katrina is - "Why are we still talking about that. Isn't that yesterday's news...". But then that's the society we live in today. We have all the compassion in the world while it's still fresh in our minds but as new disasters happen to take their place they become "yesterday's news".

A bit of "yesterday's news" landed on my doorstep Friday as I was catching up on Mary Held's ministry via her blog. Her story of James is but a small picture into the daily struggles that Trinity and the Touchglobal staff see daily. An excerpt from her blog:

Emergency response can be built around individual and family crises as well as to a community disaster. In the case of James, his crisis started in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He was living on a boat in Slidell, LA, which was completely washed away in Katrina. He lived on the boat with his twin brother, who had evacuated to Tennessee. James decided to stay in Slidell during Katrina. He ended up surviving although losing all of his personal belongings and the shelter of his brother’s boat.

James' emergency state lasted for 2½ years post Katrina - I can only imagine how exhausted he must be. His story only snowballed after the storm. He received emergency assistance from FEMA and he was able to live off that temporarily. However, James did not have any help long-term – to connect with resources, another place to live, and get his basic needs met. After Katrina, he found out that his brother, whom he was close to, died while in Tennessee. At that point, James became depressed and less motivated.

This begs the question then...would God have sent Katrina just to save this one soul? Would he have sent all those workers to NO just to minister to this one man's needs? Are there others just like him? Would our God care this much for just one person? Didn't our God care so much for YOU that not only did he send his one and only son, but allowed Him to be crucified just for YOU?

And this is just one man in one city far away. There are many more just like James going through their own struggles and needing the love of Christ, even here at home. Please help me to pray that we would be receptive to those around us and that God would give us the courage to reach out and show God's love through our words and deeds.

1 John 3:17-18
If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

Cleaning Opportunity

Cris and George were visiting with the Mulligans on Monday and in conversation Shirley shared she would be having all kinds of company on May 23. Cris asked if she would like to have some cleaning done on May 21, and she said that would be wonderful. So, we're looking for a crew of about 6 - 8 ladies (or men) to assist with getting the house cleaned and ready for the company.

I think we can be done in no more than 1 1/2 hours and the plan would be to leave from the church at 9:00 a.m. and get there right after so we should be able to leave approximately at 11:00 a.m. Any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yard Work

Cris and George are still looking for those willing to help with yard work this summer, as they help the Mulligans with the mowing and trimming. If interested, please give them a call or drop them an email at Rrr16rude@aol.com

Surveys

Just a quick reminder that the surveys I sent out earlier this year were to help me to know who would still be helping this year so I could adjust my calling list accordingly. I'm still missing quite a few surveys. If you've lost yours or just forgot to send them in, would you at least email me with a short "Yes I want to serve" or "No, I'm just too busy this year" response? I really do appreciate each and every one of you who have been such a blessing this last year and look forward to what God has in store for 2008.
